How it is tested

Every Management of Care item is also tagged to a step of clinical judgment, because the category tells you WHAT is being asked about and the step tells you what kind of thinking is being asked for. A management of care item at recognize cues and one at take action are different tasks on the same subject.

1
Recognize cuesWhat matters here?

Sorting the relevant from the noise in a patient picture that contains both.

2
Analyze cuesWhat could it mean?

Linking findings to what would explain them, and to what they rule out.

3
Prioritize hypothesesWhat matters MOST?

Ranking by urgency and risk — the step where most "I knew that" answers are lost.

4
Generate solutionsWhat can I do?

Naming the actions that would address the priority, before choosing between them.

5
Take actionWhat will I do first?

Choosing and sequencing — the largest share of the bank, and of the exam.

6
Evaluate outcomesDid it work?

Reading the response to the intervention, and deciding whether to continue or change.

What that means for how you practise it

  • Volume alone will not move this category. 15–21% of the exam is a meaningful share, but items are lost at a specific reasoning step, and that step is what the practice has to target.
  • Work it against the clock at least sometimes. Every category is tested under the same time pressure as the rest.
  • Read the rationale on the ones you got right. A correct answer reached by the wrong route is a wrong answer that has not happened yet.
